Objective and Eligibility

The Self Employment Scheme for Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers (SRMS) aims to rehabilitate manual scavengers by providing them with alternative employment opportunities. The scheme is eligible for manual scavengers, defined as those who are engaged in manual scavenging or have been doing so previously.

Salient Features and Funding

The scheme’s salient features include providing financial assistance to manual scavengers for self-employment projects. The funding pattern consists of a subsidy component and a loan component, with the subsidy being provided by the Government of India and the loan being provided by banks.

Repayment and Subsidy

The loan repayment period is 3-5 years, and the subsidy amount is 50% of the project cost, subject to a maximum of ₹25,000.

Implementing Agencies and Role of Banks

The implementing agencies for the scheme are the National Safai Karamcharis Finance and Development Corporation (NSKFDC) and the State Scheduled Castes Development Corporations (SCDCs). Banks play a crucial role in the scheme by providing loans to eligible beneficiaries.

Types of Projects and Training

The scheme supports various types of projects, including small business, agriculture, and service sector projects. Training is provided to beneficiaries to enhance their skills and capacity.

Monitoring and Evaluation

A cumulative monthly progress report is maintained to monitor the scheme’s progress. The report includes details such as physical targets, applications received, loan sanctioned, loan disbursed, and applications rejected.
